Deciding on a Quilt Size: Tips and Questions for making the BIG decision!

Deciding on the size of a quilt to make is a choice you can put off when making a quilt, but eventually....you have to decide! Here are some helpful questions you can ask that can make the decision a little easier:

  1. Intended use: Consider who the quilt is for and how it will be used. A baby quilt will be smaller than a queen or king-sized quilt. A lap quilt will be smaller than a bed quilt.

  2. Mattress size: If the quilt is intended for use on a bed, consider the size of the mattress. A twin quilt works well for a twin bed, while a queen quilt will fit a queen-sized bed. If you're unsure about the size of the bed, measure the mattress and add a few inches to each side for overhang.

  3. Design and pattern: Some quilt designs or patterns may work better with certain sizes. For example, a quilt with a large, intricate pattern may be better suited for a larger size, while a simpler pattern may work well for a smaller size.

  4. Personal preference: Finally, consider your personal preference for the size of the quilt. Do you like a lot of overhang on your bed, or do you prefer a smaller size? Do you want a lap quilt that's big enough to snuggle under with someone else, or just for yourself?

As a reference point, here are the standard sizes for some common types of quilts:

  1. Baby Quilt: 36 inches x 52 inches (91 cm x 132 cm)
  2. Lap Quilt: 50 inches x 60 inches (127 cm x 152 cm)
  3. Twin Quilt: 68 inches x 88 inches (173 cm x 224 cm)
  4. Full/Double Quilt: 84 inches x 88 inches (213 cm x 224 cm)
  5. Queen Quilt: 90 inches x 95 inches (229 cm x 241 cm)
  6. King Quilt: 105 inches x 95 inches (267 cm x 241 cm)

Remember  that these sizes may vary slightly depending on the quilt pattern, the fabric used, and the maker's preference. Also, some quilts may be oversized for added drape or to accommodate pillow-top mattresses!
